For losing our tempers, bullying others and flying off the handle is a sure way to failure. Keeping calm, composed and warm in a difficult situation will always with the race.

The Power of Words

The Power of Words is immense! There are many ways to say a sentence. Choosing the right one is the decider on those who are magnetic, and those who hide in the shadows. I have seen a many a highly skilled being not meet their full potential due to poor use of vocabulary, tone and expression.

Not only is a good use of language essential for great communication, but it is so incredibly important to help us motivate ourselves, our teams and our clients. So how can we use words to pick ourselves up through difficult times and essentially keep ourselves focused?

Sayings That Help

So let’s start with motivating ourselves. Time to find some sayings that help you. When I was going through my divorce, a particularly difficult time in my life, emotionally I was very down. I was drained of my creative spark, my never-ending energy was nowhere to be seen and I was hurting big time.

Naturally, these blows in life are going to have a negative impact on our business mojo and ability to deliver.  Your energy is down, your focus wandering, and your self-esteem at an all-time low.  I had to find as many coping strategies as I could. Eating well, taking time for me. Looking for things to make me smile… a little bird outside my window. Someone opening a door for me. It’s these little things that helped bring me back!

I wrote out a saying a friend shared with me. She said to it me one day in another context and it was like being hit over the head with a mallet. It hit me hard between the eyes.  I began reading this saying daily. Whenever I felt a pang of hurt, instantly I would refer to this saying to kick myself up the behind to keep going and not let myself be a victim.  What was the saying

“Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional”

By reading this I knew I was going to feel pain and hurt; it’s only natural.  What I would not do, however, is allow myself to indulge in this pain, dwell upon my fears and suffer in a pit of loneliness.

I had to pull my socks up, do things I didn’t feel up to or want to do, get back out there and keep my self-worth and identity.  Try to remember that no matter how shitty the situation.  No matter how much crap is thrown at you… you will get through it!

“Live life like a waterfall. Not a cistern that merely contains”

Remember, time will always bring your silver lining.  Stop dwelling on tomorrow and just focus on today when it comes to your emotions.  A night’s sleep can make the blackest of moments appear a little less daunting.

Setting Coping Strategies

When we are struggling with emotional turmoil, be it business or personal issues, refer back to some basic coping strategies:

  1. The biggest step towards happiness: Forget tomorrow! Just keep focusing on today. What’s your next step for now. What has to be done today.
  2. Try to let go of the feeling and not allow it to take hold of you – keep remembering “it’s only a feeling” – it will pass in time.  Instead, focus put your energies into a recovery action plan and keep moving forward. Plan what you will do for lunch. Go to the toilet and breathe!
  3. Don’t focus on one scenario to a challenge.  Map out multiple options before you react.
  4. Take your time.  Sleep on your thoughts before making ANY decisions.
  5. Take time out and do something relaxing (for me this is riding my horses, gardening, sports or art) something that completely removes you from overthinking. The route to all evil!  This I find always delivers the solution to me without me having to dwell upon it.
  6. Consult with others, colleagues, mentors, family – whomever that may be to widen your net of ideas and give you confidence. But remember not to take on their negativity and baggage too!
  7. Stay calm, stay centred.  This too (like all the other shit thrown at you) will pass.

Finally, you must always remember “What doesn’t kill me, will make me stronger”

Embrace your challenges.  Learn from them and be proud of your recovery.  You may stumble in life, but “you will never, ever fail, as long as you get back up”.
